How the Government incentive payments can work for you

In July the Government announced incentive payments for employers hiring NEW trainees and apprentices. But how do they work and how can they benefit your business? *update 11 November:  Apprenticeship incentive payments have been extended until 31 March 2021.

The incentive payments can total up to £4,000 for one employee, meaning you can invest back into your business, supporting your organisations costs of:

  • Uniforms.
  • Facilities.
  • Travel expenses.
  • Salary payments.
  • Training and upskilling of current staff.
As part of the Government’s ‘Plan for Jobs’ to get the UK economy back on its feet, the incentive payments can support your business to get back on track on a limited budget.

Traineeships

Our employer-led traineeships are individual programmes designed to meet the needs of your business whilst providing young people with key skills and knowledge to start, and progress, in their careers.

Suitable for any sector, traineeships provide many benefits to your business such as boosting morale, fresh and innovative ideas and providing meaningful opportunities for the young people in your community.

The Government will fund employers who provide trainees with work experience, at a rate of £1,000 per trainee from now until 31 January 2021.

Hiring a trainee

Hiring a trainee doesn’t cost you anything – all costs are met by the Government, and as part of our commitment to enable social mobility we also provide a training allowance ensuring your trainee can get to and from their work placement.

Progressing a trainee

We want our trainees to have a meaningful work experience placement with the opportunity to progress. As part of your commitment, all trainees need to be offered an interview for any vacancies you might have.

If you progress your trainee into an apprenticeship before 31 January 2021, you will also be eligible for the apprenticeship incentive payment of up to £3,000.

About the incentives

As employer, you will get paid £1,000 for each new trainee hired between now and 31 January 2021.

How to claim the incentives

Traineeships are pre-apprentice programmes, therefore you need to be registered on the apprentice service in order to receive the payments

Apprenticeships

Hiring an apprentice

We provide an easy 5-step recruitment process following a needs-analysis that focuses on your current, and future, staff training and development needs.

  2. We’ll help you choose an apprenticeship that matches what your looking at the appropriate level.
  3. We’ll check what funding is available to you – this can vary depending on the size of your organisation. Find out more about funding and the apprenticeship levy.
  4. We provide an apprenticeship recruitment service, which includes screening applicants to ensure they’re the right fit for your business. You then interview and select your apprentice.
  5. We will then set up your Service Level Agreement.

About the incentives

The payments received depend on the age of the apprentice:

  • £3,000 for 16-18 year olds (£2,000 as announced plus the additional £1,000 the Government already provides).
  • £3,000 for 19-24 year olds who have previously been in care or who have a Local Authority Education, Health and Care plan (£2,000 as announced plus the additional £1,000 the Government already provides).
  • £2,000 for 19-24 year olds.
  • £1,500 for 25+.
The payments are only available for new employees.
 
  • The payment will be made directly to employers in two equal instalments, where the apprentice is still in learning – at day 90 and day 365.
  • There will be no limit on the number of incentive payments that an employer can claim for eligible apprentices.
  • The start date is 1 August for both levy-paying and non-levy paying employers.
  • The apprentice must be a new employee with a contract start date between 1 August 2020 and 31 January 2021 (inclusive) update: the incentice payments have been extended until 31 March 2021.
  • Claims can be made by employers from 1 September 2020.
  • All employers need to do is register for the apprenticeship service. We can assist you with your registration.
You can spend the payment on anything to support your organisation’s costs. For example, you could spend it on facilities, uniforms, your apprentice’s travel or their salary. You do not have to pay it back.

How to claim the incentives

You will need to be registered with the apprenticeship service.

Equal payments will be made at day 90 and day 365 of employment.
