10 reasons to hire an apprentice

What are the benefits of apprenticeships?

Apprenticeships are jobs with qualifications, and ensure your employee is developing skills and knowledge relevant to their role. They are for anyone aged 16+ and can be used to expand your workforce cost-effectively (and also to upskill current staff).

Below we list 10 reasons how hiring an apprentice can benefit your business – and with 96% of employers with apprentices having experienced at least one benefit from taking on apprentices – with most counting at least eight benefits – find out the impact they can make to your business.

1

Cost-effective training solution

Apprenticeships provide a cost-effective training solution, whilst ensuring your staff are learning skills relevant to their role.

If you pay the apprenticeship levy, you can utilise your levy to pay for your apprenticeships. SMEs that don’t pay the levy make a 5% contribution of the total amount and the Government pays the rest. Unsure if you’re a levy payer? Contact us as and our experienced team can advise you.

We provide a simple recruitment service for apprenticeships so you don’t spend money, or time, on recruitment and hand-pick candidates that match your specifications ready for interview.

Plus, we can support you to embed apprenticeships into your long-term recruitment strategy.

2

Bespoke to your needs

Apprenticeships are designed to meet the needs of your business, and have been designed by employers to ensure apprenticeships deliver the knowledge, skills and behaviours that you need as an employer.

86% of employers said that apprentices helped to develop relevant skills for the organisation, and to fill the skills gap (National Apprenticeship Service). Depending on the apprenticeship, there are optional pathways to further ensure training meets your needs.

Plus, as part of our service to you we conduct a thorough needs analysis to ensure your staff training and development needs are met now and in the future.

3

Gain a competitive edge

By providing opportunities to young people or those looking to reskill you will have exclusive access to talent and ideas that can give your business a competitive edge in a saturated market.

According to the National Apprenticeship Service, 74% of employers say that apprenticeships improved product or service quality.

4

Boost in productivity

The National Apprenticeship Service surveyed employers and 78% said apprentices improve productivity.

Cebr stated that apprenticeships can bring a boost to productivity as high as £10,000. In a report by FE News, Barclays state: “Our apprentices contribute a huge productivity impact to the business, with each apprentice contributing £18,000 of net productivity gains over the course of their programme. This boost not only benefits the apprentices themselves, and of course our business, it also impacts the whole economy and helps to narrow the skills gap between the UK and its competitors abroad – an issue of growing importance in these uncertain political and economic times.”

Lack of training at management level can also result in a loss of productivity. The Office for National Statistics in its Management Practices and Productivity Report highlight a statistical link between management practices and productivity, with ineffective managers resulting in a decrease in productivity. We offer a number of apprenticeships for managers and/or team leaders to improve their skills.

5

Current staff build their skills in training and management

Current employees build skills in mentoring, training and management.

Your current employees will support your apprentice to gain the skills they need, so your current workforce naturally build skills in mentoring, training and management – these skills can also be supported with formal qualifications through apprenticeships to upskill staff such as Team Leader or Departmental Manager.

6

Boost staff loyalty and morale and reduce staff turnover

In a recent employer survey, The National Apprenticeship Service revealed that 73% of companies said apprentices were more loyal employees than non-apprentices, and 92% of employers said hiring apprentices leads to a more motivated and satisfied workforce.

Loyal staff results in less staff turnover saving you money – training and retaining staff is a more economical solution due to the cost and time lost for replacing staff.

7

Build a socially responsible business and improve your company image

Build a socially responsible business by providing opportunities in your local community, reducing unemployment and supporting regional growth.

The National Apprenticeship Service says 25% of consumers are willing to pay more for products from a business that employs apprentices, and 67% of employers say that employing apprentices improved their image in the sector.

Apprenticeships offer sustainable employment opportunities for young people and those looking to reskill.

8

Create a learning culture

Create a learning culture to build knowledge, competence and skills in your current workforce and see current employees build skills in mentoring, training and management.

Current employees can further benefit from turning these skills into a formal qualification through an apprenticeship such as team leader or manager.

In a 2019 survey by LinkedIn, it was revealed that 94% of employees said they would stay at a company longer if it invested in their staff development – by creating a learning culture your people know you value them as your key resource.
