What are apprenticeships?

Apprenticeships are training programmes lasting between 12 and 30 months providing the apprentice with practical, on-the-job experience and qualifications and providing you with loyal employees to fill a skills gap cost-effectively, or upksill your current staff.

  • Apprentices are aged 16 or over and combine working with studying to gain job-specific skills and knowledge.
  • Apprentices can be new or current employees.
  • Apprentices must be paid at least the minimum apprenticeship wage.

Your apprentice must:

  • Work with experienced staff.
  • Learn job-specific skills.
  • Study during their working week (for example, at a college or training organisation).
  • Undertake six hours minimum per week of formal off-the-job training.
  • Be provided with the opportunity to practise new skills in a real work environment.

Off-the-job training

All apprenticeships must include six hours off-the-job training minimum per week to reinforce practical, work-based learning with theory. It’s training received by the apprentice, during the apprentice’s regular working hours, for the purpose of achieving their apprenticeship. Contact us to find out more about what this entails and how it is implemented.

You can get government funding to cover some of the cost of training and assessing an apprentice if you’re in England.

Funding and the Apprenticeship Levy

As an employer you fall into one of two groups: levy payers  and non-levy payersIf you’re an employer with a pay bill over £3million each year, you must pay the Apprenticeship Levy, employers with a pay bill of less than £3 million a year will not need to pay the levy.

Levy payers

As an employer, you’ll have to pay Apprenticeship Levy each month if you have an annual pay bill of more than £3 million - Apprenticeship Levy is charged at 0.5% of your annual pay bill. You’ll receive funds to spend on training and assessing your apprentices. The government will add 10%.

Non-Levy payers

You pay 5% towards the cost of training and assessing your apprentice. You need to: agree a payment schedule with the training organisation and pay them directly for the training. The government will pay the rest (95%) up to the funding band maximum. They’ll pay it directly to the training organisation. You could be eligible for extra funding depending on both your and your apprentice’s circumstances.
