What are traineeships?
Traineeships are employer-led short programmes for 16-24 year olds that allow you to fill a skills gap and access local untapped talent to shape your future workforce.
On 8 July the Government announced it will provide an additional £111 million this year for traineeships in England, to fund high quality work placements and training for 16-24 year olds. This funding is enough to triple participation in traineeships. For the first time ever, the government will fund employers who provide trainees with work experience, at a rate of £1,000 per trainee. The government will improve provision and expand eligibility for traineeships to those with Level 3 qualifications and below, to ensure that more young people have access to high quality training.
1
Cost-effective resource
All traineeship costs are met by the Government and are fully-funded programmes.
As part of our commitment to support social mobility we also provide a bursary and travel expenses for young people to travel to and from their place of work to ensure every young person is afforded the opportunity able to gain the skills and experience to smarten up their CV and kickstart their career.
The Government recently announced incentives for employers of £1,000 per new trainee until 31 January 2021.
2
Build a socially responsible business
Build a socially responsible business by providing opportunities for young people in your local community and reducing regional unemployment.
In turn this will improve your company image on a local and regional level and make you an employer of choice as well as attract new customers with consumers willing to pay more for socially-responsible products.
3
Flexible, bespoke programmes
Traineeships are employer-led – they are designed to meet your business needs whilst simultaneously providing young people the opportunity to gain skills and experience to start their careers.
They last from 6-12 weeks and are suitable for any industry – from construction to health and social care to retail – covering many roles from administration and customer services, to warehousing and marketing.
Traineeships mean you can fill a skills gap or get vital support at your busiest times.
4
Cut recruitment costs
As employer-led flexible programmes, traineeships can be built into your recruitment strategy – but at no cost to you.
As part of our service, we advertise and recruit trainees, skills-matching to your needs and the career aspirations of the trainee.
With a short duration and short commitment, traineeships provide an excellent way of recruiting and sampling potential candidates for current or future vacancies, and progression into an apprenticeship.
5
Gain a competitive edge
Tapping into the bright young minds of the future can give you the edge over your competition – in a saturated market place your trainee can provide you with ideas and new ways of working that will help you stand out from the crowd.
Don’t let local talent slip through the net – a traineeship gives you the opportunity to trial keen and enthusiastic young people and move them into an apprenticeship.
6
Current staff build their skills in training and management
Current employees build skills in mentoring, training and management.
Trainees are typically assigned a mentor, or employees that can support them to gain the skills they need, so your current workforce naturally build skills in mentoring, training and management – these skills can also be supported with a formal qualification for current staff such as an apprenticeship in team leading.
7
Develop a loyal and talented workforce
Boost loyalty and morale resulting in reduced staff turnover. Traineeships will allow you to shape the skills and experience of young people from your local community, helping your business to develop a loyal and talented workforce.
Employing local talent from surrounding areas means you’re employing someone who probably already knows about you, your business, and what you’re about. Progressing suitable trainees onto apprenticeships as a sustainable employment opportunity can result in long-term loyal employees.
Local untapped talent can also bring with it new ideas and new ways of working motivating your whole workforce.
8
Suitable for any sector
Traineeships are suitable for any sector, from construction to health and social care, to logistics and retail.
They can provide support in many roles from administration to marketing, to warehousing and IT.
Traineeships are flexible programmes, and through a comprehensive needs-analysis we can identify your short- and long-term recruitment needs and provide cost-effective solutions embedding traineeships into your recruitment strategy.
9
Create a learning culture
Create a learning culture to build knowledge, competence and skills in your current workforce and see employees build skills in mentoring, training and management.
Current employees can further benefit from turning these skills into a formal qualification through an apprenticeship such as team leader or manager.
In a 2019 survey by LinkedIn, it was revealed that 94% of employees said they would stay at a company longer if it invested in their staff development – by creating a learning culture your people know you value them as your key resource through training and development.
10
Support the economic recovery of the UK
The Government have provided incentives for employers of £1,000 for each trainee you take on until the 31st January 2021. Support the nation’s economic recovery following Covid-19 and provide young people with meaningful work experience so they can successfully progress into sustainable employment.
We want to provide young people with sustainable opportunities that support social mobility and support the Government in kickstarting the UK economy. With £1,000 for each new trainee, there’s never been a better time for you to shape your future workforce with untapped talent and ensure your staff are building skills and knowledge directly relevant to their role.
