BBC Radio 4: Interview with Business Administration Apprentice, Lillie

Continuing an Apprenticeship Remotely

Yesterday, Lillie Tempest-Routledge, a Level 3 Business Administrator Apprentice and receptionist at our Head office in Chelmsford, was interviewed on the BBC Radio 4 PM programme by Evan Davies.

With young people facing their biggest challenge yet in the labour market due to the Covid-19 pandemic, 21-year-old Lillie spoke to Evan about the continuation of her apprenticeship remotely, her plans after completion and balancing this with her role of being a carer.

Lillie started her apprenticeship in 2019, and discusses the continuation of her apprenticeship remotely, and her plans for the future:

“I am currently doing a Level 3 Business Administration Apprenticeship, which I will be looking to complete in a few weeks time, so I’ve been continuing to do this at home, working virtually with my Teaching Assessor, and once I’ve reached 100% I have to trigger what is called end-point assessment, which after 1-3 months I will then achieve, which fingers-crossed, which will then be my distinction. And then once I’ve qualified, the company that I work for offer their staff members other courses, so I will be looking to do Level 3 Team Management.

The main reason why I went for an apprenticeship from my personal point of view, is because once I’ve completed my apprenticeship I know there is a promised job at the end, and Shaw Trust only advertise the positions if there is a promised job at the end of their completion.”

Lillie went on to discuss the relationship between parents and children, and her role as a carer during the pandemic:

“A lot of children having to be at home with their parents, and doing online working, I feel that what schools have put in place is the best that they can for the time being. I myself have a younger sister who is in year 6 and experiencing her last few months in primary school. We also have a vulnerable parent at home which is my mum so I have to ensure that I’m shielding her and protecting my family as well so there’s lots to consider with this current situation and it’s very uncertain time with job losses and children not being able to go to school.”

Gillian Keegan, MP for Chichester and Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Apprenticeships and Skills

“Lillie has adapted really well in lockdown, successfully balancing changes to her job role, completing her apprenticeship and caring for her family. She has always put 100% into her job and continues to do so, and is a well-respected and valued member of the team and I couldn’t have asked for a more dedicated apprentice and look forward to her progressing within Shaw Trust.”
