Progression into employment with Tesco for Daniel

Progression into Employment with Tesco for Daniel Clarke on our Movement to Work programme

Daniel Clarke joined our Movement to Work programme in November 2020, where in partnership with Tesco and Job Centre Plus we aim to give young people the opportunity to gain skills, qualifications and on-the-job experience followed by a guaranteed interview to progress into sustainable employment with retail or customer service.

Being deaf, Daniel was supported by live captions during his qualification and an interpreter for his interview. While on the programme his hard work and commitment saw him successfully progress into employment with Tesco – so we caught up with him to ask him about his experience!

What were you doing before you joined the programme?

Previously, I have worked as a part-time kitchen porter in a restaurant.

Why did you want to join the course?

I joined so I could gain work experience, and I’ve always wanted to work in retail. I also wanted to gain a full-time employment.

What did you find the most interesting and the most challenging?

I found the work placement really interesting, applying skills and being active.

The most challenging part was working towards my qualification – but I did it!

What impact has it had on you professionally?

I was successful in my interview and moved into employment at Tesco so it’s the start of a new career and full-time employment.

What impact has it had on you personally?

It built up my confidence and made me more willing to learn new things. I felt determined to do well.

How were you supported during your course?

I was supported by my tutor, an interpreter, and I had access to live caption on the Microsoft teams’ video calls.

What are some words or phrases that sum up your time on the course?

Fun, hard work, interesting and motivating!

Would you recommend the course?

Yes, as you gain qualifications and can do work experience, and it enabled me to move into a career in retail.

If you your experience was an animal, what would it be?

A wolf, as they live in groups/teams and are focused!

Is there any staff member you would like to highlight that demonstrated care and commitment to developing and progressing your career?

Debbie Cole supported me with gaining my qualification.

“Movement to Work aims to tackle youth unemployment by providing young people with the opportunity to gain skills and qualifications together with work experience to move into sustainable employment.

We have a longstanding partnership with Tesco to deliver Movement to Work within the retail sector, where learners gain skills, qualifications and knowledge in customer service together with employability skills which includes support with their CV and interview techniques. Skills are then applied in a practical work placement within a local Tesco store followed by a guaranteed interview.

Daniel is a great example of what Movement to Work is all about – he was keen, showed commitment and applied his skills during his Tesco placement and his positive attitude saw him progress into employment with Tesco – well done Daniel!”
