Traineeships: Experiences so far!
We caught up with three of our current trainees to ask them a few questions about their experience so far!
Find out how Reece (RL), Aaron (AP) and Ethan (EB) are getting on and if they would recommend the traineeship!
“I have developed skills in communication and teamwork, as well as become more used to working with others across a video call. I have also managed to maintain my punctuality and improve my time management skills.”
Why did you decide to do a traineeship?
RL – I wanted to try something new after going to college for a full year and not enjoying it – and the online work from the start made my financial problems less of a problem as it cost a lot to travel out of Bradford.
AP – I wanted to broaden my skills and increase my chances of being employed.
EB – I wasn’t in college for a year and I got an opportunity to join a Traineeship program which I was told would help find me a job, so I decided to give it a try.
What did you know about traineeships before you started? Did you learn about them in school?
RL – Until now I had never heard of a traineeship, it was all new. We never learned about it in school or even after I left. Now that I’m on it I would recommend it to anyone that is finding it hard to start there career properly.
AP – I always thought a traineeship was like an apprenticeship, we also did not learn in it school.
EB – I’ve never heard of a traineeship. Before I always thought after school you did either sixth form or college as that’s what I was told in school.
What have you found the most interesting and the most challenging so far?
RL – I have found the most interesting thing about this traineeship is the fact its not always going to be online work and we will soon be working in a placement for whatever we have chosen to do as a career. Most challenging for me so far is the amount of work we have been given in a short amount of time but it is easily dealt with with a bit of time management throughout the week.
AP – I find it very interesting that the traineeship course is only 12 weeks long, as almost all other education courses are at least a year in length. The wording in some of the questions of the workbooks were a little bit open and ambiguous, making it a little tough to answer some of them!
EB – The most interesting part of the traineeship so far is learning all the skills you need to be successful in job searching – and everything else you learn in such a short space of time. The most challenging part – the amount of work we have to do has been a struggle for me as I’m not very good at English so I struggle answering questions but my tutors are there to help.
What skills have you learnt?
RL – I’ve developed much better time management skills as there are deadlines for workbooks to be handed in. My communication skills have become better as we are asked a lot of discussion questions and questions about ourselves which I think is good, as you can sometimes speak about things you didn’t know before.
AP – I have developed skills in communication and teamwork, as well as become more used to working with others across a video call. I have also managed to maintain my punctuality and improve my time management skills.
EB – I have developed better team work skills as I have worked with Reece and Aaron through the questions and I think we worked well together and supported each other with the work.
What are your future goals and how do you think the traineeship will help you get there?
RL – My future goal is to become a fully qualified joiner, this traineeship and the people that work at Ixion are going to help me do that when I eventually finish the course and get an Apprenticeship.
AP – I’d like to maybe start my own games development company, but for now I’d like a job in games development.
EB – My future goals are to finally do a job that I’m happy with. Ixion helps you find a career that you would be happy with so hopefully if I enjoy it then that would help with getting a job I enjoy.
What impact has it had on you personally?
RL – The first part of the Traineeship alone has helped me with some skills, after the online work is the work experience placement which will have an impact on me as I have never worked before and it will be a new experience.
AP – It’s a welcome change to get back into a routine of getting up in a morning and getting ready for the traineeship lessons.
EB – The traineeship has boosted my communication skills as I have had to work with people I’ve never spoken to before and we worked together well to boost out teamwork skills
How are you being supported during your traineeship?
RL – The support I have been given has helped a lot as I have always been told that if I need anything from any of the staff I can drop them a message and the responses are either within a day or just after. They also have given me good feedback for me to work on which I have always seen as a positive so I can better myself and work from it.
AP – The tutors are very open to answer any questions you may have and will always offer to give their assistance if they think you need it.
EB – The support on the traineeship has been very good, everything I needed help with Maria and Pete have always helped me complete to a good standard and supported me a lot throughout the course.
Would you recommend the traineeship?
RL – Yes I would, especially to anyone finding it hard to find any type of employment.
AP – It depends on if you think it will benefit you, but I would recommend this one if you are looking for a Apprenticeship.
EB – Yes I would recommend the traineeship as I am finding it very helpful for my career path.
