National Numeracy Day

National Numeracy Day is a national campaign to encourage adults and children to build confidence and skills with numbers. It was established in 2012 as an independent charity to help promote the importance of numeracy skills in children and adults. Every May, you are invited to participate in their events and activities on National Numeracy Day.

This year National Numeracy Day takes place on 17 May 2023.

Why maths is important

Maths is used in everyday life, and you may not even realise it. It could be the simple things like working out how much money you have for the month and keeping to your budget while shopping. Reading the labels on your food to see how many grams are in a serving or measuring out food on a scale for a recipe you are following. Wherever you go and whatever you do at some point you will use mathematics. For this reason, maths is crucial in the operation of day-to-day life, and you should always be striving to improve your math skills. Government statistics suggest that 17 million adults (49% of the working-age population of England) have the numeracy level that we expect of primary school children.
