Verity's story

Tell us a little bit about yourself

I am 27 years old, and I recently got engaged to my fiancé of five years, we’re due to get married next year in September.

This is my second time completing an apprenticeship with Ixion, because back in 2017 I gained my level two in Business Administration. I’m now working towards my level three.

Tell us about your current role

I work for Hertfordshire Partnership Foundation NHS Trust, and my role is working with the safeguarding team. So, I work with a variety of nurses, social workers and I support them by doing the administration side of things.

Why did you decide that an apprenticeship was the right route for you?

I really enjoyed doing my level two back in 2017. I found it was really quite enjoyable, the company was so supportive, and my tutor Michelle was amazing.

I just enjoyed the whole concept of an apprenticeship of learning while being on the job, and it gave me that opportunity to gain so much experience in the work environment which college and sixth form doesn’t do. I thought level three was perfect because it progresses you and opens so many job opportunities going forward.

The NHS were giving that opportunity to everyone, and it’s free, so I thought why not, there’s an opportunity to do it so I thought it would be good for future prospects.

What impact has it had on you personally?

It’s definitely increased my confidence, I used to be quiet and shy. Ever since doing this people treat you like an adult, they don’t treat you like a child. It’s really enjoyable and with my apprenticeship being with the Hertfordshire NHS Trust, it helps me with future jobs, because it’s so hard to get into the NHS Trust.

So, the apprenticeship gave me that opportunity for future prospects within the NHS and it’s helped me with my career.

How are you being supported during your apprenticeship?

I am supported by my manager, she’s so supportive but also supported by my tutor Veronique, who is so fun. I am actually having difficulty with my maths qualification, and she’s been so supportive in that area. Me and Veronique get on so well, whenever we meet up we always have a good laugh, and it’s great having that connection with the tutor.

What are your goals for the future, and how do you think the apprenticeship will benefit you going forward?
The NHS has a band system and I’m currently at band four. So, it will help me progress and go for a band five or six position in the future, and that would lead into being a personal secretary for a chief executive. I really want to go for being a personal secretary if I can in the next couple of years. So it could be really good and exciting. I think it will definitely look good on my CV gaining this qualification.
What would you say to anyone considering an apprenticeship?

I would say definitely do it. An apprenticeship is so flexible. My partner went to university, and he spent two years at university and all he gained was a qualification and massive debt, he regrets going and wishes he went down the apprenticeship route.

With an apprenticeship, you gain a qualification, work experience and money and it can lead on to a permanent job. So, there’s a lot of opportunity.

How would you sum up your apprenticeship experience so far in one sentence?
My apprenticeship experience so far, and overall, has been really rewarding.

We offer a range of apprenticeships from entry-level to senior management. Find out you can upskill in your role.
