Tanya's story

Tell us about your current role

I’m the Registrations and Certifications Team Leader at Shaw Trust. Previously I was the Registration and Certification Officer but after completing my apprenticeship I became the Team Leader.

We register learners and certificate them, but I overlook the three team members and make sure that things are being done timely and accurately. I’ve been with Shaw Trust for four years now.

Why did you decide to do an apprenticeship?

When I was the Registration and Certification Officer, we got another team member who I managed, but it wasn’t really official. We then employed more people to work underneath me, and because I had the knowledge, they offered me the chance to do an apprenticeship. I’m glad I did because it teaches you a lot more than you probably think.

What impact has it had on you professionally and personally?

The main thing that it has done is build my confidence. I didn’t really like to say how I felt before I did the apprenticeship. I would just say “oh it’s alright I’ll do that for you” and I’d never speak up about my workload.

Now I don’t do the registrations and certifications I can even out everyone’s responsibilities. Which has given me the opportunity to work on the processes. Doing this apprenticeship has also helped me have a better understanding of the different learning styles which has helped me identify what learning styles my team members have.

How were you supported during your apprenticeship?

My management changed quite a lot and so that was a bit of a barrier for me. But everyone was supportive and encouraged me with my apprenticeship. My managers gave me a day of learning each week and sent me off-the-job learning to look at.

My tutor Michelle was always so supportive of me as well. When I was going through problems at home she was always checking in on me to make sure I was ok. Michelle never made me feel under pressure and let me work at my own pace. I am grateful for Michelle for not giving up on me and giving me the confidence to complete my apprenticeship.

Would you recommend the apprenticeship?

Yes, definitely. I wish I had done an apprenticeship when I first left school, and I think everyone should consider it. Unlike going to college, you get paid to learn and you get to deal with real life staff rather than learning from a textbook, so I’d recommend it.

What are your career ambitions going forward?

I’d quite like to see what other opportunities there are within the Operational Support Service team. But at the moment, I’m focusing on trying to improve the processes within the team. I haven’t really been in the position that long, so I’d like to just make sure that it’s all done correctly before I move on and help my team progress as well so.

If your learning experience was an animal, what would it be?
Probably a tortoise, because I started off quite slow, but slow and steady wins the race!
