Jonny's Story

Tell us about the course you recently completed

I found the warehousing course through the Shaw Trust website, and I took it as it looked like a good opportunity. It was a short course lasting only five days which was also appealing. It was really helpful, and it helped me to secure an interview and a job.

During the course I learnt about health and safety, how to look after a warehouse and using a database.

Congratulations on securing a job! Can you tell us more about that?

I work at the docks in Boston. I get the chance to do lots of different tasks, but I am mainly based at the warehouse, doing things like moving steel coils out of the warehouse and loading them onto the trains.

During the interview they asked me a lot about the course. We talked about what systems they use and health and safety. They were really happy with what I learnt as it was exactly what I needed to work there.

What were you doing before?

Before finding the course I was unemployed for a number of years, so the course really has been worthwhile as it’s allowed me to get a good job.

How were you supported on your course?

Dean was helpful and was a great guy. He said I could ring him before the interview for advice. I also received help with improving my CV which was great. Everyone has been supportive, and they still are. Everyone seems happy for me now that I have got a job.

The most interesting was the regulations, knowing the business you’re working with when it comes to customer service. It’s not just about greeting your customers, its about the business place, it’s keeping your colleagues in the workplace safe, knowing certain laws when you’re working in certain areas.

What did you find the most interesting and the most challenging?

It was quite straightforward really, so I didn’t find it challenging. I learnt a lot over the five days. I enjoyed talking to everyone and meeting people and it made warehousing fun!

What impact has it had on you personally?

It has boosted my confidence and given me skills which helped me get a job, so it has had a massive impact.

How do you feel about the future?

I feel positive. I have got new skills and a good CV and secured a job, so everything is going well and I’m looking forward to the future.

Would you recommend the course?

Yes definitely. I wish I had done it years ago as it has made a massive difference, especially considering how quick and easy it was.
