Building work skills with Jump into Work

Jump into Work is for young people to kick-start their careers. They combine both practical, hands-on work experience with education and training.

We talked to two of our participants, Brandon, and one who wished to remain anonymous, to discuss their experiences.

“It has given me the confidence and knowledge to apply for jobs and change my CV to suit the job I am applying for.”

Talking Jump into Work

What impact has Jump into Work had on you?

Brandon: I think it has given me the confidence and knowledge to apply for jobs, what to expect and look out for from and employers as well as how to change my CV to suit the job I am applying for.

Anon: I have definitely sharpened and developed my communication, ICT, listening and thinking skills. It has allowed me to look and search for the jobs I feel will most benefit me.

What did you find enjoyable?

Brandon: I enjoyed the fact that I was able to participate in the lessons as well as being able to put my thoughts and opinions into the class discussions.

Anon: I found the engagement with my teacher to be the most enjoyable. As a class we were able to ask questions and have a general conversation. All the work was completed to a high standard from the students’ and teacher’s point of view which allowed the lessons to flow effortlessly.

What was most useful?

Brandon: I think the CV and cover letter work was most useful to me as I didn’t have a clue how to do any of it before I started the programme. The mock interviews were also useful as they gave me an idea of what to expect.

Anon: I feel like the preparation with mock interviews, CV builders, cover letter preparation and personal statements are extremely valuable. I’ve further learned what to expect from employers and what they expect from you as an employee. I was also able to build more confidence when going to interviews, as well as giving myself a better chance to become employed due to the preparation we all had.

How did your tutor help to build your confidence?

Brandon: She would always suggest ways to improve on the work as well as having good things to say about what I had done. I think that gave me the extra boost of motivation and confidence to do all the work and try to do it all to the best of my ability.

Anon: They would do small things such as making everyone come with a piece of news to share to the class every morning. This would build confidence subconsciously, as we have to talk in front of others week in week out, naturally building confidence.

Another way this was achieved was they would smartly challenge you with your completed work. She would ask for a further explanation where you would have to challenge yourself and have confidence to answer in fuller detail in front of the class. This was done perfectly as it never felt like you were being picked on or put under pressure.
