Even though I’ve only been here for just over a month, I’ve already done things in this job that make me feel proud.

What is your job role?

My role is to help support participants on the Shaw Trust Covid-19 Recovery Academy programme. We help individuals with their wellbeing and support them to gain qualifications to help them get back into work after being affected by Covid in any way.

What is your favourite part of your role?

Supporting the participants, that’s what I’m about. I live for supporting and helping others, always have and always will.

Why did you apply to Shaw Trust?

When I was looking at the job description and the Shaw Trust values, I read them two or three times and every time I read them, I thought that’s definitely me. It’s perfect for who I am and what I get out of a job.

What were you doing before you joined?

I was working at a mental health care home for people with all different sorts of mental health needs. I enjoyed it, but people were in there because they were told they had to be, so often didn’t want the support. When I saw the job with Shaw Trust it felt like people would want the support and help, and be asking for it, rather than us trying to support and them not wanting it.

What motivates and inspires you in your role?

Where Shaw Trust help individuals with many things, especially people who have been affected by things like Covid which affects mental health and wellbeing, if I can make a difference to someone’s life then that is what makes me proud.

What is the best piece of advice you have ever been given?

It’s actually advice from one of my favourite films – “the future can hurt but the way I look it you can either learn from it or run from it”. Which is from Rafiki in the Lion King! That is just something I have always looked at and even though it’s come from a cartoon film it is the perfect piece of advice to give someone.

What do you do in your free time?

I DJ in my free time, I love my music! I’m a Scout leader, and I also like sitting around a campfire with friends sharing a bottle a wine!

What is your favourite animal and why?

One is a cat, I’ve got two myself. One called Phoenix because he’s got a white tip at the end of his tail which made me think of a Phoenix, and Bagheera who is named after the Jungle Book character as that’s another one of my favourite Disney films. Cats are also very independent and I like to be independent.

My other choice would be a mythical creature, but I’d choose a unicorn because I love what they stand for. They’re unique, they’re courageous and independent. What a unicorn stands for is what I stand for!

What song represents your time at Ixion?

I would say Proud by Heather Small because even though I’ve only been here for just over a month I’ve already done things in this job that make me feel proud. And it’s a great song as well!
